A PROGRAM FOR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL PARAPROFESSIONALS AND TEACHERS

Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to study the teaching of elementary and middle school mathematics and have someone else pay the tuition and fees. You will enjoy seven days of study which will focus on the paraprofessional/teacher role in the mathematics classroom. The course content will directly relate to the mathematics curriculum currently taught in elementary and middle classrooms, and will provide the paraprofessional/teacher with appropriate methods of mathematical instruction. Special education paraprofessionals and teachers are also encouraged to apply. There are no prerequisites for this workshop.

PROJECT TITLE: Foundations of Arithmetic II

SPONSORING DEPARTMENT AND INSTITUTION: Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Bemidji State University. This program was made possible by an Improving Teacher Quality Grant Program administered through the Minnesota Higher Education Services Office.

INSTRUCTORS: Mr. Craig Rypkema and Dr. Glen Richgels

OBJECTIVES: The course's objectives are:

  1. to provide the paraprofessional/teacher with a complete understanding of the mathematical content found in the elementary and middle school curriculum,
  2. to model the teaching of mathematics using manipulatives to enhance both understanding and learning,
  3. to model instructional practices that will allow the paraprofessional to better serve their students and assist the classroom teacher,
  4. to provide instruction and assessment consistent with the Minnesota Graduation Rules.
  5. to provide mathematical content instruction that will enhance the participants understanding of rational numbers, decimals and integers.
  6. to provide problem solving strategies and activities that will enhance the participants ability to both solve problems and teach mathematical problem solving.

CREDIT HOURS: 3 Semester Undergraduate or Graduate Credits

An Improving Teacher Quality Grant will pay for all tuition and fees. Additionally, paraprofessionals who complete the program will receive a stipend and teachers who complete the program will receive a stipend. Stipends will depend upon final program funding.
